IPL, or Intense Pulse Light, is a type of laser hair removal device. The “intense” part of the name refers to how quickly the device pulses light onto your skin. A lot of other lasers use long pulses (which is why they’re called “long pulse lasers”), but IPLs use short pulses. IPLs are also non-ablative, which means that they don’t remove skin like other lasers do.
IPL devices can be used on all skin types and colors, including people with dark skin tones. They work by targeting melanin—the pigment in your hair—and destroying it when it absorbs energy from the laser beam. Most IPL devices target only one color at a time (for example, red or brown), so if you want to treat several different colors at once you may need multiple treatments with different machines or different settings on one machine.
